About the Series

4 virtual runs, including a special finale – a fully timed virtual run

The 20/20 Virtual Run Series is your chance to “Give Back by Giving it Heaps”. We know there are a lot of Kiwi’s doing it tough out there right now and the next few years will be a challenge as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic together. So let’s see if we can help smooth out some of the bumps … and at the same time keep ourselves fit, active and engaged. The 20/20 Run Series features four running (or walking) weekends spread over four months to make the perfect winter challenge. Your entry fee of $40 comprises a “twenty” for admin costs (bib, timing tag, medal, freight) and a “twenty” for our friends at the Auckland City Mission. Keep fit. Stay motivated. Be kind.

As we all slowly start to get our lives back to a new normal, the “virtual run” has been one of the biggest positives to come out of these difficult times for active sports enthusiasts. The team at Running Events have loved the positivity and commitment of our community through the three individual virtual events we’ve already staged; “(Not the) Run Albany”, “(Not the) Waterfront Half Marathon” and “Escape From Lockdown”. We loved it so much we thought … “let’s do some more!”

But the 20/20 Run Series is  a little bit more than just another virtual run. We’ve put together a series of four virtual events spread over four weekends; the last weekends in May, June, July and August. Each event has the option to run (or walk) 5k, 10k or a full 21k half marathon and you can use your Strava (if you don’t have it, don’t worry, it’s easy and free!) to upload your result. We’ll even tweak your time for you if you run a little bit longer or shorter than the exact distance. Each event will have its own full set of results and there’s even a series leaderboard, so you can track how you’re doing through the series. We don’t want anyone doing a “Starsky & Hutch” over their neighbour’s car bonnet, so there are no merit prizes – but we do have some great spot prizes available after each event.

The Auckland City Mission
Enough about the “giving it heaps”, how are we “giving back”? Half of your $40 entry fee will go directly to the good people at the Auckland City Mission. They do a wonderful job helping and supporting the most vulnerable and needy of our community and their stellar work will be more important than ever over the coming weeks and months. We’re proud to support the amazing work that they do … and you should be too!

What About Me?
We didn’t forget you! As well as a great fun virtual experience through the first 3 race weekends, we plan to have an optional timed training run on a set course (or maybe two courses) on the final weekend. For your participation, you’ll also receive a genuine race number with electronic timing transponder which will be sent by mail sometime prior to race two … and everyone who finishes the last event will receive an exclusive commemorative series finisher medal (if you can’t make it to Auckland for the training run, you can opt to have this sent out by courier).

So what are you waiting for? Sign up now and get ready to Give Back, by Giving it Heaps!

What Is It?

Strava is an online service for athletes to log their workouts. It is particularly awesome for runners and cyclists who use a GPS sports watch. Your workouts can be automatically uploaded from your device and you can see all your workout time, pace, splits and a million other things besides. Best of all … almost all of the best parts of the system are free.

Why Are We Using It?

Strava provides a powerful API (a way for computer systems to talk with each other) and we’ve been able to modify the software at my.runningevents (powered by Director AMS) to power our virtual run series from your Strava data. Cool. Or. What?

That means you can log your run on Strava and then import it into my.runningevents. We’ll check that the workout meets the criteria for the 20/20 Virtual Run Series and then automatically update your result on the official event results. This is all done in real-time, when you import your Strava workout.

But I Don’t Have Strava?

Did we mention it’s both free and awesome? It only takes a minute to sign up at Strava and if you are worried about privacy you can lock down your settings really tight and not even use the system for any other workouts than your 20/20 virtuals. If that still makes you uncomfortable, just create an account for as long as it takes to upload your 20/20 result and then delete it. If you are a fully paid member of the tin-foil hat brigade, you could even create a dummy email address with gmail or hotmail just for this purpose.

Still not convinced? OK, we get it. Its not for everyone. If you absolutely cannot and will not use Strava to upload your result, we’ll accept manual results from the Thursday after each race. Please do not send your result through before Thursday as this will be ignored and you may end up not getting a result at all for that virtual event.
Important! If you don’t use the Strava upload, you will miss out on some or all of the spot prize draws.

How Does It Work?

It’s pretty easy. Go to “My Results” on my.runningevents any time from 00:01 am Saturday right through to 23:59 Wednesday. Find the line for the virtual run and click on the view icon. On the detail page, you’ll see a green “Strava Upload” button. Click on that and you’ll be asked to permit the Running Events app to read your workout data. We’ll pull through your last 20 workouts and validate them against the eligibility rules. Any workouts that pass will show a green “Select” button. Click that button to import this workout as the basis for your 20/20 Virtual Run Series race result.
Important! Your workout distance doesn’t need to be the exact distance of your event (5k, 10k or 21.2k). We’ve built some tolerances into the system (see rules below) and we’ll adjust your time to be correct for the race distance you registered for.

Important Eligibility Rules

For your Strava workout to be acceptable. It must meet *all* of the following criteria:

  • Workout Type on Strava must be “Run”, “Walk” or “Hike”
  • The workout must have been recorded on a GPS device. Manual workouts are not accepted.
  • The start time of your workout must be between 00:01am Saturday morning and 11:59pm Sunday night.
  • The workout distance completed must be within our acceptable tolerance. For each distance in the virtual run series, we’ve set the tolerances as follows:
    • Half Marathon: Strava distance from 20km – 25km
    • 10K: Strava distance from 9km – 14km
    • 5K: Strava distance from 4km – 8km
  • The adjusted finish time (calculated from your Strava workout time adjusted for the actual distance covered) must be within the acceptable finish times for each event. These limits are:
    • Half Marathon: 1 hr 15 – 4 hrs
    • 10K: 30 min – 2 hrs
    • 5K: 14 min – 1 hr

Dude, I bailed at [insert lowly distance here]

Registered for the half marathon but flamed out at 10k? That’s OK. It quick, easy and free to change the distance of your registration. Go to the My Registrations section of my.runningevents, view your registration and choose “Race Transfer” from the “Make Changes” button. In there you can downgrade (or upgrade!) quickly and easily. When you come back to the Strava import, your new distance will now be the one we are looking for.

OK – After all that, I am gonna need you to hold my hand through this…

We got ya – head over to this PDF and follow the steps.

The timed training run for Race Four has now been cancelled due to Auckland remaining at Covid-19 Alert Level 3.

Please continue to complete your run Virtually and safely in your neighbourhood and upload your result to your my.runningevents.co.nz account.

If you are registered for one of our future events, feel free to contact us to arrange to collect your medal there instead.

It is a requirement of your participation in the training run that you wear your race number on the front of your shirt at all times whilst taking part. Your number should be secured to your shirt by a safety pin in each corner (if you don’t have any, see our team at the start line, we’ll have plenty of spares). Your electronic timing tag is attached to the back of your race number so be careful not to crease, crush or puncture it.

Important! A printable bib will be available for you to download for Race One.

Important! Series Pass entrants must keep their race number for Races Two, Three and Four . Don’t lose it! Replacement numbers are $10.

Important! If you join the series after the bib print cut-off date, you will be able to collect a generic race bib for the Grand Finale on the morning of Race Four.

When you receive your race number, your electronic timing tag will be attached to the back. We are using disposable stick-on timing tags this year. We are sure you will appreciate the convenience of not having to attach a plastic tag to your shoes and then return it at the finish. All you have to remember is to secure your race number to the front of your shirt and you’re all set. Try to avoid holding your arm in front of the number as you cross the finish line (e.g. to turn off your watch) as this can sometimes affect the tag reading. Just wait until a few steps after the timing mat.

Important! There is no need to return your timing tag.

Important! Take care during Races Two and Three to not damage your race bib to ensure it works correctly for the timed run/walk at Race Four.

Series Points – How Are They Calculated?

The calculation method for series points for the 2020 Virtual Run Series will be the same as our other events. We believe this method will result in fairer results and help to smooth out the peaks and troughs encountered due to differing participation levels at each race.

Series points will be awarded based on where you finished relative to the winner for that distance. The first placed male and female athletes in each category receive 100 points, and then subsequent finishers are awarded points as a percentage of the winner’s time. That means that, no matter how long you take to finish, you will always earn some points in your season-long quest for greatness!

Important! Although you do not need to complete all four runs in the series to achieve an overall placing, it will obviously be difficult to win your category unless you do.

Important! The leaderboard will be updated real-time as results are loaded in. This may occur over a number of days.

You have sole responsibility for your own safety. Do not leave any pavement, cross any road, pass any driveway unless you deem it is safe for you to do so.

Please remind your own spectators that they should not attempt to accompany you in vehicles, bikes or otherwise. They must follow the normal rules of the road to reach vantage points.

While there will be some signage along the course route for Race Four, there will not be any marshals to point you along the way so ensure you have studied the course map prior to attending the run (bring one along with you to help if you are even slightly unsure of the course). We’ll have the maps on the webpage so you can pull them up on your phone if unsure.

Please remember the golden rule … Always give way to vehicles. No matter who has right of way, vehicles always win.

Your my.runningevents dashboard allows you to make a variety of changes to your registration without even needing to ask us. How good is that? From within your dashboard you can update your contact details, upgrade or downgrade your race selection or transfer your entry to another person. Just click on the LOGIN  link in the menu and follow the prompts to access the system or create a new account. Provided your account is email validated, you will find all of your registrations listed here. Select the one you wish to change and follow the Make Changes options from there. If you do have any difficulties, please just get back to us through this Contact Form.

Full details on our Refund & Transfer policy can be found here.

Important: Please do not ask for an exception. Our refund and transfer policy is clearly stated and applied evenly, without exception. We do not make exceptions to this policy under any circumstances whatsoever.

Your race number will be sent out to you prior to Race Two.  If you register for the series after this time, your race number will be waiting for you with our race crew at the start line of the Grand Finale.

For Race One, we’ll email all registered entrants a bib that you can print off and wear for your run if you’d like to.

Our MyLaps disposable timing tags are small stickers that can be found on the back of your race number.  The tag sends out a unique UHF signal that identifies you and records the exact time at which you passed the detection mats. The tags are designed to withstand rain, sweat and normal wear-and-tear – but please don’t fold or bend the bib as this can damage it.  All you need to do to make sure your result is properly recorded is to wear your race number on the front of your shirt throughout the event. The tag is disposable – you do not need to return it after the event.

Important! Keep hold of your race number after you finish. You will need it to register for the prize draw at the Awards Ceremony. Listen out for announcements.

Of course! We love walkers and all of our events are open to runners, joggers and walkers alike. Many of our events offer specific merit prizes, start times and rules for competitive walkers. Please check the event web site and you will find this information on the “Walkers” tab.

The top 5 questions didn’t work?
